Itty Bitty Tighty Whities Ornament or Gift Card Holder

Itty Bitty Tighty Whities Ornament or Gift Card Holder

“This pattern came about at Christmas time. I had just lost my mom the month before. My little guy had to be away from me at Christmas. Between that and not having his Grammie with him, his little heart was pretty heavy. I was looking for a way to help him to laugh again. I figured who wouldn’t laugh at little underwear hanging from a Christmas tree?”

Use these decorative briefs to make a coin purse or gift card holder!

Kyla Grexton is owner/operator of Keep Me in Stitchez. I had the pleasure of getting to know her through Facebook and we have become great “Sisters” in many ways. Through our journey, we've consulted each other in business and life, shared many tears, and many more laughs. It is a true pleasure to call her friend and I expect there will be a day I trek from Austin, TX to Minden, Ontario to hug her neck! In the meantime, we will continue to share our passion of family, community, and fibre.

Here, Kyla shares one of her first published patterns with us! Although she has designed many items, her focus is on spinning delicious fibres in the most vibrant colours. On occasion, she finds it absolutely necessary to share a gem of a pattern that will bring sheer joy to many and I assure you it is a pleasure to host her Itty Bitty Tighty Whities pattern. It cracks me up!

Here's what Kyla says about her Itty Bitty Tight Whities pattern:
“This pattern came about at Christmas time. I had just lost my mom the month before. My little guy had to be away from me at Christmas. Between that and not having his Grammie with him, his little heart was pretty heavy. I was looking for a way to help him to laugh again. I figured who wouldn’t laugh at little underwear hanging from a Christmas tree?   As for what to do with them, you’re as limited as your imagination! My little guy turned them into underwear for “Little Mickey.” They would work as a keychain. String them together and make an underwear garland. Or you could put them under there…   I just made you say underwear!”

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn (I used Bernat Super Value) Small amounts two colours
4mm (G)
Yarn/tapestry needle

Stitch Marker Gauge:  9 sts and 8 rows=4” with 4 mm hook

Meeting gauge is not crucial for the pattern unless you want to ensure you end up with the same measurements. Finished measurements in the photo are 3 ¼” wide x 2 ¼” high

Abbreviations Used:

Ch – chain
Beg – beginning
Sc – single crochet
Rnd – round
Sts(s) – stitch(es)
MC – Main Color
Sl st – slip stitch
CC – Contrasting color

NOTE: The ch1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.

Front: With MC, ch6.

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and each following ch to end. Ch1, turn. (5 sts)

Row 2 and alternate EVEN rows:  Sc in each st across to end. Ch1, turn.

Row 3: Sc2 in first st, sc in next 3 sts, sc2 in last st. Ch1, turn. (7 sts)

Row 5: Sc2 in first st, sc in next 5 sts, sc2 in last st. Ch1, turn. (9 sts)

Row 7: Sc2 in first st, sc in next 7 sts, sc2 in last st. Ch1, turn. (11 sts)

Row 8: Sc in each st across to end. Fasten off.

Back: Turn piece upside down, making sure that the right side is facing you. (The beginning “tail” will be on the right hand side of your work.)

Row 1: Working on the other side of the beg ch, attach yarn in first st. Ch1, sc2 in same st as ch1, sc in next 3 sts, sc2 in last st. Ch1, turn. (7 sts)

Row 2 and alternate (EVEN) rows:  Sc in each st across to end. Ch1, turn.

Row 3: Sc2 in first st, sc in next 5 sts, sc2 in last st. Ch1, turn. (9 sts)

Row 5: Sc2 in first st, sc in next 7 sts, sc2 in last st. Ch1, turn. (11 sts)

Row 7: Sc2 in first st, sc in next 9 sts, sc2 in last st.  Ch1, turn. (13 sts)

Row 9: Sc2 in first st, sc in next 11 sts, sc2 in last st. (15 sts) Move onto waistband, keeping yarn attached. You will now be working in rounds.

Waistband:

Rnd 1: Continuing from Row 9 of the back, ch 2, sc in next 11 sts in the front portion, ch2.

Rnd 2: Place stitch marker at the beginning of this round. Begin with a sc in the first stitch of the back portion, joining it into a round. Sc around, working 1sc in each ch. (30 sts)

Rnd 3: Sc in each st around. Sl st in st with marker. Fasten off.

NOTE: If you are using white as your MC, you can work an extra row here. This saves you from cutting the yarn and reattaching it for the edging. Finish off with an invisible join. Invisible join instructions are on page 3. Skip ahead to Leg Hole instructions below.

Edging:

Waistband: Join CC in any st along the back. Sc around, finish off with an invisible join. Leg holes: Join CC in any stitch around the leg. Sc around – approx. 18 sts. Finish off with an invisible join (see the images below). Repeat for other leg hole.

Seams and Flap Details: Using CC, embroider details using the images as a guide for placement.

Enjoy your “tighty whities”!

These are great, what a reminder, my mom worked in a Tighty-Whitie factory and they would sometimes make tiny ones!
