Recently, Coraline’s trip to Rio was rescheduled as her sister Penelope had moved her wedding date up so the entire family could have their reunion together as an extended reception. How cool is that? So, Coraline went up to Minden, Ontario last week to watch her parents and uncle in the Ontario 55+ Winter Games. Penelope’s wedding is apparently this weekend and from there, everyone is heading to Aspen!
Coraline in Minden – crochet wrap pattern
Needless to say, Coraline sent me a check for a ton of yarn to make something special for her and her sister Penelope. This is just getting to be too much fun! How awesome that you get to experience a part of that? This oversized cowl wrap is just that and it’s perfect. Fabulously wide and the perfect length, it isn’t heavy due to it’s mesh design and still quite warm as each mesh square creates a little pocket of warmth.
Just think. Coraline is on sabbatical for 10 more months and her sister Penelope is planning an impromptu honeymoon! In the spirit of Dr. Seuss, “Oh, the things I will make!”
Tons of pics here and the free pattern is below- just scroll down. Stay tuned for Penelope’s Whimsical Slouch over the next few days.

Instructions:
(Note: There was a typo in the repeats. I will not be able to work this up for some time, but the start is definitely fhdc 225. I suspect the repeats are 112 because the chain 3 in round 2 counts as a stitch. If you get to test this before I do, please let me know in the comments. I apologize profusely for any confusion.)
Round 1: Using Peacock, ch 1, fhdc 225, sl st into chain to form a loop, do not turn – 226 fhdc
Round 2: ch 3, *sk 1, dc, ch 1* repeat from * to * 112 times, join to 2nd chain with a sl st, do not turn – 112 dc, 112 ch-1 spaces
Round 3-13: repeat round 2 – 112 dc, 112 ch-1 spaces
Join Grey
Round 14-25: using Grey, repeat round 2 – 112 dc, 112 ch-1 spaces
Round 26: ch 1, working in both the stitches and chains hdc around, sl st, fasten off, break yarn, work in the tails.

I LOVE it!!!
I love this! Thanks for another beautiful pattern.
Thank you, Alissa!
Making this now. Some of these pictures appear to have another 2 color sections. Are these extensions of the original piece or a separate piece? Thanks for your patterns! Love them!
It’s just one really long piece. 🙂
Thank you!
I am plus-sized and want t0 make this for myself. Is this just one long loop, like a scarf with the ends sewn together?
Hi, Melissa! It’s more cylindrical. Hope that helps!
It’s one long loop, Melissa. 🙂
Love it! Thanks for sharing.
What are the finished dimensions? Love it!!
I love the design. Is it easy to do.
Broke my right arm & have a cast but still trying to use my hook & needles. Other than that, my problem is – what color is my choice to make this cool scarf
Oh no! Glad you are in good spirits and hope you heal quickly.
Love this, so beautiful!!
I made Coraline in San Fransisco and absolutely love it. I look forward to making this one, too.
I have been to Minden and have spent a lot of time there. It’s a terrific place. Kawartha Dairy ice cream is the best!
That is fantastic, Adele! I love hearing your experience, too. Please come back.
Hi Adele! It’s great to see that there’s somebody who’s been to Minden, let alone knows where it is hehehe (I live there and my significant other works at Kawartha Dairy!). If you’re in the neighbourhood and have time, check out the Kinmount Artisans Marketplace if you haven’t already. I volunteer there. I’m also taking a spinning course at the Haliburton School of The Arts and I blog about it (when I have time) at keepmeinstitchez.wordpress.com 🙂
I don’t get back as often as I’d like since moving from the area but I will keep that in mind for our next trip through. Happy spinning and stitching!
I’m getting yarn and a hook so I can get started. Thank you for the free pattern!!!!
Wonderful! What colors will you use?
I like this pattern. What are the multiples?
Thank you so much. The multiples are 2 + 1. Hope this helps. Thanks for coming by!
I just made mine in black and purple! LOVE IT! I loved learning the new stitch, and it’s so easy to make! This is a keeper!
Wonderful!
Fabulous!
I love
Ooh, thank you for sharing such a wonderful pattern! I was wondering what the multiples were for the foundation chain. I think I need to make one that is a little bigger because I’m a bigger girl.
Thanks again! 😀
Hi! It’s multiples of 2 + 1. Hope that helps!
Thank you! Sorry I asked a question that had already been answered :/ Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Fortunately, I have a lot of messages to go through and I tend to get a little behind, but I’m glad you got your answer!
How do you make the hooded wrap with the twisted front? How do you do the wrapping on yourself?
You start with it wrapped behind your shoulders, lean forward so it’s draping down to the floor, give it a twist, and bring the part that was draping over your head to hang behind your neck. Then just do a little adjusting in the mirror. Hope that helps!
Love this. Making it now. Only thing is the ch1 at the beginning, plus the ch3 for the fhdc is that ch1 just going to dangle there? Mine looks goofy 🙁
Hi, MadHatterzDesigns!
Feel free to send me a picture via email if you are still having trouble. Once you join them, it all straightens out. (I apologize for not being available sooner.)
Oh, I’m anxious to try this!!!
Round 2 says to join the 2nd row and what I have I a figure 8 now. Are there pictures to go along with this? I’m confused yet people say hoe easy it is.
Hi, Jenn! I’m behind answering from the holidays, but please feel free to contact me via email and send me a picture of what you have. This will be one large loop unless you want to join as a figure 8. Just keep your piece flat and fold.
Just about finished making this using Bernat Softee Chunky in Teal & Kimono (variegated teal, cream, and rusty orange). Love this pattern so much! Thank you for sharing! 🙂
Exciting! Sounds beautiful, Brigette. Once you finish, I’d love to see you submit a picture to show off what you’ve made. 🙂

OMG I love this. This is gorgeous.
Thank you, Tracie!
Ok.. So, I have a strange question.. I just purchased some ravenscroft Gaea yarn from blue moon fiber arts for my birthday. I’m totally in love, and I’m totally in love with this pattern. However, it’s not a bulky yarn. The gauge of my yarn is 16-22 st. per 4 inches (10 cm.) on 4.5-5.5 needles ( knitters). Since that gauge is pretty much double the bulky that was used here, should I double the stitch count? I definitely have enough yarn.. I have about 915 yards total. I’d love your insight, as you are familiar with this pattern. (I’ll send a picture of the final product, too… If we can figure it out!) Crickett
Hi, Crickett ~ Thank you for your kind words! I don’t have experience with that yarn, but the absolute best thing to do is to work up a 12″ x 12″ square (or larger) to get your accurate gauge and see if you get the same measurement. If you get the same measurement, you’ll get the same size. If you find yourself having trouble measuring it, you may contact me. There are also countless websites with assistance. Good luck!
Love it! Very beautiful.
Thanks, Millie!
Will this fit a bigger girl? I love this but I am on the chunky side. Lol
🙂 I made certain it would be comfortable for many, Amanda.
love the size being a bigger lady something for me
So glad it will work out, Gwen!
I love it, I got some nice yarn for my birthday, and have been trying to find the perfect pattern. I think I found it 🙂 ty
Fabulous!
Thank you, Melissa
Luv them all!! So hard to choose!! Thank u
My pleasure, Kathy.
I can’t find my comment so I am going to repost…
I am on the bigger side and am wondering if this will fit me or do I need to make it bigger? Thank you!
Hi, Amanda.
I wish I could help, but that is something you will need to determine yourself. I suggest using a tape measure and checking your gauge.
You could also just wing it for the first few rows and see what you think.
Use the following information as a guide: Approximate Finished Dimensions: Length 96″, width 22″
I am wondering if the 4 skeins equal 352 yards total, or if one skein is 352 yards approx? I want to buy yarn soon, but on the red heart website it shows the reflective yarn is not the bulky (5) weight. I don’t want to end up buying too much or not enough. Thanks!
Hello, Brigitte ~
That is the total number of yardage this project requires. Thank you for inquiring! Enjoy!

Very thoughtful, Lois!
That’s very thoughtful, Lois!
its lovely
Thank you!
Do u think that u would ever make some how to wear videos or have some instructions as to how to wear? I am currently making mine in black and dark dark teal.
I am considering it, yes. 🙂
I made this cowl – it is gorgeous thank you. Not sure I can add photos but they are on Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Hjb72/long-wide-cowl) if the link works – not sure if I’ve made it public.
Thank you so much! There is a link in the menu to Submit Your Picture http://simplycollectiblecrochet.com/submit-your-picture/ .
I love ❤ this!
simply lovely, I have soo much choice which stash yarn to use this is stash worthy LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!
Wonderful, Norma! Thank you so much for your kind words and for coming by.
Hi!
I find this pattern just amazing and reeeally want to make it but I need to translate the pattern first (since I’m Swedish) so was wondering it these are US or UK abbreviations?
Will have to figure out how much of the Lace yarn I’m gonna need, since I’m pretty warm blooded I’m thinking of making a lighter one so this yarn isn’t bulky, meaning I might have to add to the original pattern if I understand correctly?
Sorry for all the question, this will be my first real wearable crochet piece. =3
Hello, Ida ~
Sorry for the late reply. The abbreviations are US and you are correct. You will need to add to the width and length a bit. Thank you so much for coming by!
Hello, Ida! I’m noticing my reply never posted to you. I’m so sorry. This is US Abbreviations. I’ll make sure to make that change in the post. Thank you!
Hey, this is a great piece. I’m using different yarn, as Red Heart isn’t easily available here, and am enjoying myself immensely working on it. Simple but very stylish.
Thank you so much for the feedback, Chris! I’m so glad you are enjoying it.
Does the cowl have a twist in it or is it flat? I hope you’ll understand my question… thanks 🙂
Hi, Melanie. It’s worked flat, in the round.
Hi. Love the look, but I am a but puzzled. How can a foundation of 226 allow a row of 226 stitches & 226 ch-1 spaces with a *sk1, dc, ch1* repeat??
Forgive me for taking so long to reply! My comments were all muddled. That is a horrible typo and I don’t know how that happened. I don’t have time to test it, but the repeats must be 112- or so. If you have an opportunity to work it, please let me know. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
Love this pattern and have started round 1. Is there a correction to the numbers in round 2? If you “sk 1, dc, ch 1” shouldn’t you have half the dc amounts or does the repeat start after the skip 1?
Yes! That is a horrible typo and I’m so sorry. I don’t have time to test it, but the repeats must be 112- or so. If you have an opportunity to work it, please let me know. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
I am working on this pattern now and I feel I am missing something. Round 2 I have half of the 226 total due to the skip with the skip, dc, chain 1. Please advise
Yes, Denise! I’m so sorry for my horrible typo. I don’t know how that happened. I don’t have time to test it, but the repeats must be 112- or so. If you have an opportunity to work it, please let me know. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
I’m having a hard time understanding if I have 226 foundation stitches then in next row do a sk1 db ch1 how I will end up with 226 db and 226 ch1 spaces. Shouldn’t I have 113 of each? What am I doing wrong?
Yes! I’m so, so sorry for the awful typo. I don’t have time to test it, but the repeats must be 112- or so. If you can, please let me know what you get. So sorry!
What are your thoughts on using a verigated (or a patterned yarn like the new “cakes”) for this? Love this and want to try it out as soon as I can get thru my long list of “I wanna s”.
Dianne ~ I completely understand this list of “I wannas!” Sometimes, it feels more like a mound, doesn’t it? I think a variegated would look really cool! Only thing is, be sure you are using the same weight of yarn or modify as needed so you get the right size.
Is the length measurement (98 inches) the circumference or the length of the folded piece laying flat -in which case the circumference would be double that 98″? Thx
Thanks for asking! It’s the circumference. 🙂
I know this is a fairly old post, but I would love to know if I can use a worsted weight yarn for this, or if it would cause too many changes to the pattern to be worth explaining what I’d need to do. If not I need to get some bulky yarn eventually!!!
It may be an old post, but many people are still making this extremely popular piece. 🙂 It definitely requires the weight called for in the pattern or you will end up with a very small cowl. Good luck!
