How to Make a Coin Purse from your Favorite Motif

Well, I love billiards and I needed a coin pouch and something to do aside from working on WIPS. You know what I mean? I already had these 8-ball Motifs I was using as coasters in my car and kitchen table, so I grabbed them and started sewing. What’s more, if my husband has to take my car somewhere, he won’t be too embarrassed. (Let’s pretend that was planned.)

How to Make a Coin Purse from your Favorite Motif

First, I made sure to have two of the same motif. As long as the motifs are the same size, it can be whatever works.

This cool 8-ball Motif can be found HERE.

Materials:

  • 2 motifs – one for each side
  • yarn needle
  • sewing needle
  • zipper
  • thread
  • 1 yard or more of yarn to sew your motifs together
  • keyring or zipper pull

Start by placing your motifs back to back making sure they are even. Using your yarn needle and yarn, sew a portion of your motif edges together to for a pocket leaving part of it open. The amount you leave open depends on the size opening you want for the purpose of your little pouch/bag/purse.

I left a 3-1/2″ opening and used a 7″ zipper. You may use any size appropriate. I chose 7″ because I felt 5″ (my only other choice at the time) was too short and I like when my bags have extra zipper tucked inside. Why not?

Tucking the zipper in, I sewed the closed end of the zipper to one end of the opening, unzipped it, and started sewing one side of the zipper to one side of the pouch. For larger pouches, you may want to pin it down so it stays in place. I’m a craft rebel, so I did it the frustrating way- not pinning.

Now you’ll start working up the other side. Zip it up and sew the loose end of the zipper down. Unzip it and continue sewing back down the opposite side.

Add a keyring to your zipper for a car key zipper pull and grab some cash to put in it.
Next time, I’ll make one large enough for my license and debit cards, but I should be using cash anyway.
