Possibly the most adorable set I’ve seen in a very long time, Cupcake Lovers Beanie is surprisingly easy and quick to work up for an infant or adult friend! So quick in fact, that you can make a handful of these Cupcake Lovers Beanies in a weekend. Imagine the different colors you can do. (Why does my brain always go to chocolate?) Try using buttons for the cherries instead of crocheting. How about sprinkles?

I was inspired to make this hat after seeing the cupcake edging in THIS ROUNDUP. Aren’t these edgings amazing? So, I had to make the hat and you can look forward to other cupcake creations in the near future.

Red Heart Super Saver, medium worsted weight (amounts vary according to size of hat)

  • Lavender, 50-125 yds
  • Aran, 5-10 yds
  • Light Pink, 4-8 yds
  • White, 4-9 yds
  • Hot Pink, 2-4 yds

Materials- I/5.5mm Clover hook, E/3.5mm Clover hook, scissors, yarn needle

Difficulty – Easy to Intermediate

Size

Note:  This hat should fit a little oversized since there isn’t much stretch to the cupcakes. This is why the measurements are set as they are.

Infant – 18″, Child – 20″, Teen – 22″, Adult – 24”

Measurements in Pattern – Each cupcake measures 2 inches.

Gauge – 4″ = 12 hdc, 9 rows

Stitch Guide in American Terms

Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Dc – double crochet
Xs – times
BLO – back loop only
FLO – front loop only
DC5TOG – double crochet 5 together
HDC2TOG – half double crochet 2 together (half double crochet decrease)

Special Stitches

DC5TOG – double crochet 5 together is as follows:  Starting with one loop on hook, yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 (2 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 (4 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 (5 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 (6 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 6 loops on hook (1 loop on hook), yarn over, pull through to lock the loops in place. Notes

This hat is worked from the bottom up. Each row ends by joining with a slip stitch. The beginning chain counts as a stitch. This pattern is multiples of 6 + 5. Stitch counts and repeats are listed in multiples.

Instructions

Loosely ch 53 (infant)/ ch 59 (child)/ ch 65 (teen), ch 71 (adult) join with a slip stitch to form a loop.

R1-R2:  Using Lavender, ch 1, hdc in each around, slip stitch with Aran to join – 53 hdc/ 59 hdc/ 65 hdc.

R3:  Ch 3, dc in the same stitch, dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next, ch 1, skip 3, * 2 dc, dc, 2 dc, ch 1, skip 3, repeat from * 8 xs (infant)/ 9 xs (child)/ 10 xs (teen)/ 11 xs (adult), slip stitch with Light Pink.

R4:  Ch 2, sc 4 BLO, slip stitch into the ch-1 space, * sc 5 BLO, slip stitch into the ch-1 space, repeat from * around, slip stitch with White to join.

R5:  Ch 2, dc 4 tog, ch 5, *dc 5 tog, ch 5, repeat from * around, slip stitch with Lavender to join.

R6:  Ch 2, hdc 5 in the ch-5 space, hdc 6 in each ch-5 space around – 54 hdc/ 60 hdc/ 66 hdc/ 72 hdc.

R7- R12 (infant)/ R7- R16 (child)/ R7- 20 (teen)/ R7- R24 (adult):  hdc around – 54 hdc/ 60 hdc/ 66 hdc/ 72 hdc.

R13 (infant)/ R17 (child)/ R21 (teen)/ R25 (adult):  FLO, HDC2TOG around 27 xs (infant)/ 30 xs (child)/ 33 xs (teen)/ 36 xs (adult), join.

R14/ R18/ R22/ R26:  FLO, HDC2TOG around until one stitch remains, hdc in the last stitch.
Leaving an 8” to 12” long tail, fasten off. Using your yarn needle, pick up one loop from each stitch and cinch it closed. Weave in your tails.

Make cherries (using E-hook):  Ch 2, sc 3 in the 2nd chain from the hook, pull the tail through to fasten off. Sew cherries on to cupcakes.
