Wow! These patterns are very nice. Also, wonderful choice of colors!
Thank you so much!
I cant figure out how to start it
Chain 24. Thanks!
Feel free to email me a picture and we can review your progress. Thanks! SimplyCollectibleCrochet@gmail[dot]com
Check your gauge or check the size of the hat in the pattern. Yes, my son wore a 24″ hat when he was 2 years old. That is a big and tall size. Your family’s heads vary. Always check the gauge and pattern to be sure you are doing it exactly like I do. Same yarn… same tools…
Same here so I am going to do another and make some adult sizes by adding one more round same as round 2. This size fit me but I am very petite. The hat worked up fast. Thanks for the pattern.
Isn’t that funny? I’ve had over 10 people tell me that it’s huge and others tell me it is infant sized. lol. It’s all in the gauge.
Love this hat, it came out perfect adult size and worked up in less than an hour. ❤
Thanks, Amanda!
If I had an extra 2 weeks in one day, I’d love to! Unfortunately, I cannot- especially during the holidays.
Great pattern thanks so much for sharing! I would share the hat but not sure how to do that here, but I will be posting my finished hat on my page https://www.facebook.com/Davinasdesigns/ where I have also shared your link to your website.
Thank you so much! Thanks for sharing, too!
If after having 48 DC then the next row with 2 DC in each space does not equal 48 DC. Now sure why every row is 48 DC?
Well, when you make it, you’ll see that there aren’t any increases after Round 2. 🙂 Thanks for coming by!
NOT increases 😀 This is a v-stich. It’s only between the previous “V”, and not every space.
Glad you got it!
To clarify for round 2, do you do 2 DC in each stitch? That is a bit confusing.
No, Ma’am. This is not an increase row. You need to work 2 double crochets between each set of 2 double crochets from the previous row to double the count. You will do that 23 times. Then, you end with a double crochet in the same as the chain space to complete the last set of 2 double crochets together. Each [2 dc] creates a v-stitch like you see in the pic. Hope this helps!
What would the pattern be for a large adult sizes? Head measures 26″.
Woah! That’s beyond big-n-tall which is 24″. You will definitely need to change something, but without working it up, I wouldn’t be able to help right this moment. The best thing to do is go by the gauge which tells you how many stitches and rows per inch. If your gauge is the same as mine, you’ll hit it spot on!
I am a beginner and am having trouble understanding row 3-13 * 2 dc in space between 2 dc from previous row, repeat from * 23 times, dc in the same as the chain space ???? Help please
Hi, Elizabeth!
To make it a little bit bigger, do i add a few stitches to the chain?
You can certainly try it! That’s what I would do.
I THINK (which can get me in trouble) that this pattern is so forgiving that if I needed it to be a little bigger, or smaller, it would be pretty easy to do. Once I caught on to where you were telling me to work, it has been easy. My granddaughter doesn’t have hair this long. Do you thing I could start with a small circle and HDC, increasing until I got to the place yours picks up and then go forward from there? I am making my DIL one like this and could make granddaughter a matching one, but closed on top.
It’s very possible! Just experiment to see what you like best. Let us know how you did!
It is adult size. Check your gauge and hook size for a great fit.
Fits up to size 24″ 🙂 Hope this helps!
It says this, “2 DC in each space around 23 times.”
Where do you see “10 times?”
Thank you so much for this pattern, it’s simple, but so pretty. I changed it up a little because I wanted a thicker hat and used Loops and Threads Charisma (bulky). 10 rounds of dc instead of 13 made it long enough and I used most of one skein. I also did 24 sc around a ponyholder to start. It turned out great! Thanks again!! ????
Way to rock the modifications, Wendy! I’d love for your to submit a pic so I can share off your talents!
Hi Wendy, I am wanting to make one with Charisma as well. Can you tell me what size hook you used? Thank you!
Hi, Gabrielle ~ This is specifically a messy bun hat and not a ponytail hat. Hope that helps!
I’m having a little trouble with rows 3 on. I got the increases in row 2 (and a few extra somehow so I had 50 stiches). Then I skipped every other stitch for row 3 and it looks like I have fewer stiches again. I could go through each loop now. But am I missing a chain stitch between the 2 dcs?
You’ll see in my Special Stitches section that my v-stitch is not created by a chain. It is merely the pressure of placing 2 more stitches between them and pushing them apart. Otherwise, your hat would be too lacy. Feel free to email me a pic of your progress so I can help!
Hi! I can now make this hat without looking at the patron after only making two of them. It is AWESOME! My only question is… I am using red heart with love and a K hook and these are super tight on me. Any suggestions? Thanks!! Love all your patterns!
*pattern* phone thought I meant patron ????
Thank you, Lin! The yarn isn’t stretchy enough. Vanna’s Choice has a lot of give. You could try to go up another hook size.
I was reading all the comments and had to laugh. They clearly are new to reading crochet patterns. I made this hat for a Christmas present and love it. Your instructions are very easy to follow and I made the hat without any difficulties. Thank you for posting the pattern. I really appreciate the time you spent designing it and thank you for allowing us to view it free of charge. Merry Christmas!
You are so sweet, Jenn. Thank you! It’s just sets of 2. That’s all. 🙂
Great pattern I have made 5 of these beanies and people love them. Thanks
Thank you so much, Tina!
Great pattern! I love the V stitch. It gives it a nice look. I thought this pattern was very “easy peasy” indeed! I have to tell you that you have great patience with some of the people who are telling you that your pattern is difficult and wrong! I am going to make probably six or eight of these for Christmas. Thanks for sharing your pattern for free!
Oh, Beth ~ Thank you so much. SO much, really. You’ve no idea.
Hi Celina,
I just finished this pattern for your messy bun hat. It is adorable and so easy! I made this for my daughter in a Jade color and she is so excited! Now, she wants me to make one for her friend!
Thank you so much for the pattern and the easy directions! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Hugs!
That’s wonderful, Renee! Thank you so much for your feedback.
Should I make single chain between the dc to form the V
No, Ma’am. You’ll see in the Special Stitches section that this v-stitch does not have a chain.
I figured it out!
Glad you got it! (I cannot do a video at this time, but the closeup will help anyone else who has this question. You’ll see that 2 double crochets go between 2 of the previous row. The image is very clear.) 🙂 Thanks!
First, test your gauge and make sure it matches mine. Once it comes out the same size, let me know. 😀
You have to check your gauge. LOL
Honestly, the size of the hook doesn’t matter as long as YOUR GAUGE matches MY GAUGE.
Well, this dummy is like the other designer dummies. There are SEVERAL variations of the v-stitch. FOLLOW my instructions and it should look like mine. Thank you so much for your opinion.
Then be sure you are using Vanna’s Choice.
This is MY v-stitch. There are SEVERAL variations of the v-stitch.
Hi, Ellen ~ Please feel free to send me an image of your progress and be sure to tell me which pattern you are following along with the issue. Thanks!
Once I figured out that I needed to read you special stitches to make this item, everything went smoothly and I am obsessed with this Easy Peasy Messy Bun pattern. I have made three so far and working on a scarf to match one of them.
Thank for this great pattern.
Fantastic! Thank you so much.
I have really enjoyed this pattern.. So easy to do for a quick gift. I have made 4 in just a couple of hours. The pattern was very easy to read and simple to do. I can make it now without reasing the pattern
That’s great, Kathy! Thank you for coming by.
I normally have trouble with hat patterns and this one was a breeze! Thank you!!
Sweet! Thanks, Stephanie!
I want to chime in with a few of the last commenters and say this was a great pattern and indeed “easy peasy.” I had no issues when making it. Most patterns start with a definition of special stitches, just as yours with your way of making the V-stitch, and you explained how to work it into the pattern…I don’t understand people telling you it’s wrong. But enough of that. ???? Thank you for creating such unique and fun patterns. I found this hat first and was reading through the pattern and saw the “seashore hat” and made that one first ( I submitted a pic via your form on the website.) I have just a few rows/rounds left on this one and I’ll take a pic to show you. I’m so grateful for crochet artists like you that take the time to create patterns and offer them free of charge. Thank you for all your hard work, it is appreciated!! Merry Christmas!
Thank you, Stephanie! I’ll be doing another series of You Made This! and I’m hoping to add your hat as well. I’ve had so many entries that it’s hard to keep up, but it’s exciting. Thank you again for your kind words.
The hat turned out great! Perfect size. Thank you for the pattern! It was quick and easy….Just what I was looking for.
My pleasure!
Thank you so much <3
I just Love it!! God Bless
So glad you like it!
Celina,
Thank you for the Easy Peasy Pattern. It was a nice change from the pattern I have been using for a ponytail hat. Here is a picture of my finished hat. I could not get your box to work.

Wonderful, Donna! Thank you so much for your feedback and sharing your pic! It’s lovely. I’ll do my best to add it to one of my You Made This! series.
When doing a guage what stitch am I using? Sorry if its a dumb question!
Hi, Margie ~ Thanks for pointing that out! It’s half double crochet. (Can’t believe it isn’t in there! Well, it is now.)
I love this patterns I made one and started one this evening it’s simple and quick.I’ve made several sizes by changing yarn and or hook .Thanks for sharing
That’s great, Clara! Thanks so much.
Hi I was wondering can u do the 24 chain in a pony tail holder? Would that work out all right?
I’m not certain, Christina ~ This pattern was designed specifically to make it without as a messy bun hat and not a ponytail hat, but you could try it.
I was on the”how do you make this pattern for adults” bandwagon. I made the first one and it was child size. The second one I decided to add rows and it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to bith using a J needle. Then I decided to quit being soo cheap and buy a K needle and follow the pattern 🙂 It made a huge difference. It worked up fast and beautiful. Took me almost 30 minutes to make one. Thanks for the pattern I love it soo much I’ve already made 3 for my friends and they love it too.
Oh, Melissa ~ You are so funny. Thank you for the giggle. I appreciate you! And thank you for your kind words!
I love the pattern! I can adjust for the size needed with no problems. I am not very creative with crocheting, and was wondering if you had an idea how to make this hat with out the bun hole? Thanks!
Hi, Jody ~ If you want this as a Full Beanie, follow the instruction at the end of the pattern OR try my Desert Hope Slouch Beanie which is basically the same – http://simplycollectiblecrochet.com/2014/06/desert-hope-slouch-beanie/
Hi, love the easy pattern. Thank you for sharing! 🙂 I wonder, is it okay to sell finished items from your pattern?
Thank you, Manda ~ Yes, it is.
I’ve started this 4 times now and each time when I get to row 3 I realize there is a twist. What am I doing wrong??
Hi, Kathy ~ Feel free to email me a picture so I can see what’s happening. 🙂
Hi I just want to say I found this pattern easy and I am no pro. I have already made 3 for family and another 3 to sell for charity events I put on. I will be making at least one a day for a whike as it is enjoyable to make. To all the people who are so rude, I say use your common sense. I have adjusted where necessary to make for teens, o a p and me 🙂
Thank you for allowing us to do this free of charge
I am sorry people can be so offensive, I think it is great, easy to follow & video instructions too.
I have also added buttons or croche flowers and crochet up the hole for my mum who loves it at 93.
Thank you so much xxx
Joann ~ Thank you so much for your feedback! I’m so glad the pattern has worked out so well for you!
I do my best to assist others and it can be a challenge; but, I do have to remind myself that even the best professors have a hard time communicating with their students. Even the best of friends cannot comprehend how the other styles her hair.
Your note is very uplifting. Thank you!
Fantastic free pattern that could easily be sold for at least $5. To all the ‘new’ crochet pattern readers ~ don’t ever feel like you’re no good at crochet or that you’ll never ‘get it.’ Even professional crochet artists and designers were new at some point! Just keep practicing and when someone mentions that they ‘had to laugh at the comments’ because you’re a newbie, fugettaboutit! Just don’t give up and soon it’ll just CLICK. I promise.
Thank you for your kind words and positive attitude, Michelle!
