While there have been so many messy bun hats taking the world by storm. I made a conscious decision to make several designs to represent different levels of creators as well as different styles for different outfits. We all have different reasons we choose specific crochet patterns so I am doing my absolute best to cover all the bases. This lovely hat is super fast and really quite easy to work up. Shells may appear to be a difficult crochet stitch, but really they are so simple! You must give this one a try. You can actually learn this stitch and 44 other in my Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library. US size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook or size needed to match gauge
Gauge: 16 hdc x 12 rows = 4″
Circumference: 20” (to fit head circumference up to 24”)

Pattern uses US crochet terms
|fhdc||Foundation half double crochet|
|hdc||Half double crochet|
|sl st||Slip stitch|
|tlo||Third loop only|
Foundation half double crochet (fhdc):
First fhdc: Ch 3, yo, insert hook into 3rd chain from hook (skipped chs do not count as a st), yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through first loop (foundation ch made), yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook. (first fdc made)
Remaining fhdc: Yo, insert hook into foundation ch of first fhdc, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1 loop (foundation ch made), yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook. (fhdc made)
Note: Join rnds where indicated with a sl st in first st.
Rnd 1: 60 fhdc, join. (60 sts)
Rnds 2-4: Ch 1 (counts as hdc), hdc in tlo of each st around, join. (60 hdc)
Rnd 5: Ch 1 (counts as sc), sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts, [sc in next st, sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts] 9 times, join. (50 dc, 10 sc)
Rnd 6: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in first st, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, sk next 2 sts, [5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, sk next 2 sts] 9 times, 2 dc in same st as start of rnd, join.
Rnd 7: Ch 1 (counts as sc), sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts, [sc in next st, sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk next 2 sts] 9 times, join. (50 dc, 10 sc)
Rnds 8-12: Repeat rnds 6-7 twice, then repeat rnd 6 once more.
Rnd 13: Ch 1 (counts as hdc), sk next st, [hdc in next st, sk next st] around, join. (30 hdc)
Rnd 14: Ch 1 (counts as hdc), hdc in each st around, join.
Fasten off; weave in ends.
Note: To make a full beanie, you can work half double crochet 2 together decreases all the way around for 1-2 rounds, then sew the top closed.
