If you’re looking for something cozy and have ever wanted to try the moss stitch in crochet, make a pair of these mitt gloves.

These moss stitch crochet mittens are so easy to put together. The pattern is really easy to follow and you’ll end up with a snuggly pair of gloves. Each glove has decorative ribbed cuffs on the bottom of the moss stitch sections.

The yarn makes it even easier to fashion gloves for the winter. They’re made out of Ella Rae Cozy Alpaca yarn. It’s an acrylic/ alpaca blend and a worsted weight. The best part is it’s machine washable and maintains its stitch definition.

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced Beginner

MATERIALS:

Hook: I/9/5.5mm

Yarn: Ella Rae Cozy Alpaca – 1 skein each lavender (07) and moonlight (18)

Yardage: 175 yds main color, 65 yds contrasting color.

Tools: Scissors, tapestry needle

ABBREVIATIONS:

st = stitch

ch = chain

sl st= slip stitch

sc=single crochet

hdc=half double crochet

dc=double crochet

fpdc= front post double crochet

bpdc= back post double crochet

sk=skip

sp=space

FINISHED SIZE: 10” long, 12” circumference at the widest point under the thumb

Gauge: 8 (sc, ch 1) x 20 rnds= 4”

PATTERN:

Mitten (make 2)

Fingers:

Ch 5  with Lavender.

Rnd 1: 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sc in each of the next 2 st. In the last ch, make 3 sc. Working down the opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc into the last ch. (10 sc)

Rnd 2: 3 sc in the first st. Sc into each of the next 4 sts, 3 sc into the next st. Sc into each of the last 4 sts, sl st to join. (14 sc)

Rnd 3: Sc in the first st, 3 sc in the next st. Sc into each of the next 6 sts, 3 sc into the next st. Sc into each of the last 5 sts, sl st to join. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc into the first st. *Ch 1, do not sk a st, sc into the next st; rep from * around. Ch 1, sl st into the first sc, then sl st into the ch-1 sp. (18 sc, 18 ch-1 sps)

Place a marker in the first st of each rnd to mark the beginning of rnd. Move marker up as work progresses.

Rnds 5-18: Sc into the first ch-1 sp. *Ch 1, sk next sc, sc into next ch-1 sp; rep from * around. Ch 1, sl st into the first sc, then sl st into the ch-1 sp.

Fasten off.

Thumb:

Rnd 1: With Lavender make a magic ring, make 8 sc in the ring. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: Sc into the first st. *Ch 1, do not sk a st, sc into the next st; rep from * around. Ch 1, sl st into the first sc, then sl st into the ch-1 sp. (8 sc, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnds 3-10:  Sc into the first ch-1 sp. *Ch 1, sk next sc, sc into next ch-1 sp; rep from * around. Ch 1, sl st into the first sc, then sl st into the ch-1 sp. (8 sc, 8 ch-1 sps)

Fasten off. Whip stitch  1 sc and 1 ch-1 sp from the finger portion and thumb portion to attach. Attach yarn in any ch-1 sp.

Rnd 11: Sc into the first ch-1 sp. *Ch 1, sk next sc, sc into next ch-1 sp; rep from * around. Ch 1, sl st into the first sc, then sl st into the ch-1 sp. (24 sc, 24 ch-1 sps)

Rnds 12-22: Repeat rnd 11.

Fasten off.

Rnd 23: Attach moonlight yarn in any ch-1 sp. 2 sc in first ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp, *2 sc in the next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in the next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around. (36 sc)

Rnd 24: Sc in the first st, *sc in each of the next 5 sts, sc2tog in the next 2 sts; repeat from * around.  (31 sc)

Rnd 25: Sc in the first st, *sc in each of the next 4 sts, sc2tog in the next 2 sts; repeat from * around. (25 sc)

Rnd 26: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), *fpdc around the next st, bpdc around the next st; repeat from * around  Sl st to ch 3 to join. (12 fpdc, 12 bpdc)

Rnds 27-36: Repeat rnd 26.

Fasten off. Weave in all ends, and fold cuffs down halfway.

Repeat for 2nd mitten.
