So, I really, really needed to make some penguins for a little “scene” I’m working on which you will see in a couple of weeks. These little guys just crack me up! The placement of each detail gives them so much character and really brings them to life.
Playful Penguin Crochet Applique Pattern
Make sure to come back and let me know how you use them. First, I’ll be putting them on some hats!
Materials:
15 yds of Black worsted weight – Red Heart Super Saver
10 yds of White worsted weight – Red Heart Super Saver
5 yds of Orange worsted weight – Red Heart Super Saver
G-Hook/ 4.25
Scissors
Yarn Needle
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
hdc – half double crochet
sk – skip
Work both pieces in a spiral. Do not chain. Do not turn.
5 ch picot: Ch5, sl st into the first ch like you are forming a loop and that’s one picot made. Continue onto the next stitch.
Chest & Face:
R1: using white, magic circle (or ch4 and sl st to make a loop), 10hdc in circle, tighten the circle – 10 stitches
R2: 2hdc in each stitch around – 20 stitches
sk1, sl st, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing
Sew the beak and eyes into place if you feel ready. You can always wait until the end.
Body:
R1: using black, magic circle (or ch4 and sl st to make a loop), 10hdc in circle, tighten the circle – 10 stitches
R2: 2hdc in each stitch around – 20 stitches
R3: *hdc, 2hdc* 3 times, [hdc, 5-ch picot, hdc in the same stitch], *hdc, 2hdc* 3 times, [hdc, 5-ch picot, hdc in the same stitch], *hdc, 2hdc* 3 times, sk1, sl st, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Decide which position you want the wings and sew the front (white) piece on.
Feet:
Decide where you would like the feet. Using orange, sl st onto the black edging, 2hdc in the same stitch as the sl st, 2hdc in the next stitch, fasten off, sew in the ends.
Do this twice if you want 2 feet.
