35+ Free Christmas Tree Crochet Patterns

Christmas tree crochet patterns are the perfect addition to your holiday decor. You can make three-dimensional trees that can stand on a shelf or table, flat trees that serve as ornaments or appliques, or even Christmas tree themed hats!

This collection of free crochet patterns for Christmas trees includes all of those options so you can make the perfect tree to add to your decor or give as a gift to a Christmas-loving friend.

Why Crochet a Christmas Tree?

Crocheting Christmas trees is fun and exciting. They make unique and inexpensive ornaments and gifts, and in the case of holiday hats, can give a plain outfit a holiday twist.

When making Christmas tree crochet patterns that aren’t hats, you don’t have to worry much about gauge because they don’t have to be an exact size. They can also be a great way to use leftover yarn from other projects if you have green yarn, or use other colors for embellishments like ornaments on your tree.

How to Make Crochet Christmas Ornaments Stiff?

To make a crochet Christmas ornament like a Christmas tree stiff, you can use a mixture of water and glue or a commercial stiffening product that’s applied to the project. After drying, the crochet piece will be sturdier.

Three-dimensional Christmas trees that are made to stand can be filled with polyfill stuffing or weighted beads, or the designer may use a cardboard or paperboard form to support the project.

Materials for Making Crochet Christmas Trees

Yarn and Crochet Hook

Of course the most important considerations when starting a crochet Christmas tree project is the yarn and hook you will use. Most of the patterns listed below use yarn weights between 3 and 5, or DK, worsted, or bulky.

The pattern you are considering will advise you as to what size crochet hook to use. Sometimes, especially for 3D projects, you might use a smaller hook than would normally be used for that yarn. This will tighten the stitches and make the project more stable (and the stuffing won’t peek out of any holes in the stitches).

Many of these projects are worked in cotton or acrylic yarns. Some of our favorite cotton yarns are Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, Lily Sugar n' Cream, and Knit Picks Comfy Worsted.

Acrylic and acrylic wool blends are also a great choice. Try Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Simply Soft, Lion Brand Wool-Ease, or Lion Brand Hue + Me.

Notions and Optional Materials for Decoration

Most of these patterns are suitable for new stitchers, but if you need help with any of the terms, getting started, or finishing your projects, our Crochet Fundamentals workshop is for you! This collection of videos will boost your skills and confidence and ensure your projects look as good as the pictures.

3D Christmas Tree Crochet Patterns

Three-dimensional Christmas trees give your holiday stitching an amigurumi twist. Some of these projects will stand on their own, while others require additional support or stuffing. They can be displayed on a shelf, table, or mantle, or some are small enough to use as ornaments on your big tree!
