Applique or Coaster Free crochet pattern

Do you need a quick gift for a birthday or graduation? Keep the muck out of your cup holders! This stash buster project is super easy and quick to make. Imagine all the stocking stuffers you can bust out quickly.

Materials Needed: Cotton Yarn in yellow and black, G-hook for the circle, I-hook for the overlay of eyes and mouth (or crochet very loosely), Scissors, Yarn Needle

R1:  chain 3, hdc 6 (half double crochet) in the 3rd chain from the hook, do not join, do not chain (6 sts)
R2:  hdc increase in each stitch of the previous round (12 sts)
R3:  * hdc, hdc increase * (repeat from * to * 6 times – 18 sts)
R4:  * hdc 2, hdc increase * (repeat from * to * 6 times – 24 sts)
R5:  * hdc 3, hdc increase * (repeat from * to * 6 times – 30 sts)
R6:  * hdc 4, hdc increase * (repeat from * to * 6 times – 36 sts)

Continue increasing the stitches in the same sequence for each round to make larger pieces. I find that working in the round this way tends to make less of a hexagonal shape than starting a new round with a slip stitch, but it will cause more of a jog or slant if you are changing colors. When you reach the size you need, skip a stitch and slip stitch in the next. Fasten off and sew in your ends. Continue to work the overlay by following this tutorial. Of course, you may also stitch the facial features, but I find this to be much easier!

How to Crochet a Circle by Simply Collectible

Make 5 rounds with yellow to measure approximately 3- 1/4″ in diameter which fits most cup holders.

Using black, make a loop, insert your hook where you want to begin the bottom of one eye, and pull the loop up from underneath.

Make a slip stitch and pull your yarn up through the top. Cut your yarn leaving an 8″ tail.

Thread the end of the yarn through your yarn needle and push your needle through your work at the top of the eye to anchor down the yarn. Bring your needle back through the bottom of the eye and push down through the top to fill in the space. Sew your ends in the back.

Work the other side the same way.

The mouth is done in a similar fashion. Instead of a single slip stitch, you will work  the number of slip stitches you need to make the shape you desire. My smiley on the left is 4 slip stitches and the smiley on the right is 3 slip stitches.
