Coraline in the Wine Country, the fourth crochet pattern in the series, is celebrating Coraline’s sabbatical traveling the globe. A globe trekker in training, she still loves wearing her pumps on a bicycle and journaling by a water fountain.
Coraline in the Wine Country
She isn’t using the internet right now and loves sending letters using pen and paper, doodling over mistakes. She wrote me a letter while wearing this shawl with her feet in the Vaillancourt Fountain! Get this. She is headed up to Mendocino and working her way through wine country. So far, she’s been to Morocco, Times Square, and San Francisco on this journey. (Click each location to see the special items I made for her trip.)

Wonderful! Thanks for coming by, Crystal. I appreciate it.
I think this may be my favorite yet! They are all so pretty though it is hard to decide. Love the versatility. Been looking for a good excuse to try the Unforgettable. This may just be it. Thank You! 🙂
My pleasure, Amanda! Let me know how it works out.
Beautiful! The yarn is gorgeous and I love the color too! Thank you for sharing pattern!
Hope you have a wonderful day!

Thank you so much, Ana! I appreciate you coming by.
Any idea how many rows is “to desired length” here? I’m not good with winging it. 🙂
You could start by finding out how long you want it and use a tape measure as you go. Thanks for coming by!
I’m 5’7″ & “fluffy”. I just kept going until the corners reached from fingertip to fingertip (approx 40 rows)
Thank you I loved Coraline in San Francisco and it is so pretty. Next I am making Coraline in the Wine Country. Also thanks for the clarification on Foundation Half Double Crochet.
I appreciate that, Koa! Thanks for coming by.
Hi. I am so eager to learn how to chrochet this wrap/shawl, however, I don’t read patterns very well. I am more a visual learner. Do you have a video, how how to start this pattern?
You will do well. This definitely rates easy and once you get going, it will be great. No video.
Love this! How many rows do you have in the one pictured?
Thank you! I know it can be deceiving, but I wrote the pattern from the finished product so it’s exact. Thanks for coming by!
I love it the shawl and the color is beautiful…not sure if that is sold in my area…but there is a yarn shop that a woman runs I will have to check because she has yarns that the other stores don’t…
Thank you! I end up ordering online a lot. Red Heart is very quick to ship, too.
I Love this and am dying to make multiple for each season! I’m just confused about which chain you mean when saying “crochet in same chain as turning” I couldn’t find anything online to help!
Hi, Marissa ~ Just don’t skip that first stitch and you will be good.
Thank you so much for your generosity. It’s very beautiful and I cannot wait to start it! Skye
My pleasure, Skye. Thanks for your kind words.
I love all of Coralines fashions! Keep them coming!
Thank you so much, Nicole!
I really liked this shawl from the minute I found the pattern through your facebook page and I’m almost two thirds finished with my own version of it in dark blue hues, it’s turning out to be quite awesome!
Thank you so much for providing all these patterns free of charge!
That’s great, Nicky!
Can’t wait to make this!!!
Wonderful! Thanks for coming by, Debbie.
Beautiful. I can’t wait to start this.
Thank you, Beth. Let me know how it turns out.
This is stunning! I am working on this in pink hues for my sister’s friend going through chemo. What are the dimensions of your finished project?
Mine is actually from the tips of my fingers across to the other. (64″-65″) I used a tiny bit under two skeins, but you may use as much, or as little, as you wish.
I’m pretty sure this is going to be our winning pattern. Thank you so much for sharing your pattern and your time with us on this journey in CrochetManiacs
So exciting! Thank you so much.
Hi there! Love your pattern! If I may ask, do you have policy against selling items made from your patterns? Thanks so much for your response and designs!!
Hello, there! Thank you so much for your kind words. You may always sell what you make. The design is mine. The pattern is mine. What you make is all yours to do with what you wish. 🙂 Happy selling!
How big is this one?
If you continue to sequence, it can be as long or short as you want. 🙂
LOVE this pattern and just made this in the same color, “Winery’! This yarn is wonderful to crochet with and am on my 2nd one now. What is the best way to keep the ends from curling up? I did wet block it but they are still curling some.
I agree wholeheartedly. Thank you!
That’s great! I didn’t have trouble with curling after a couple of days, but it’s been a bit humid in Texas.
I am going to carefully steam block a sample of the yarn. I already sold the Winery color. I will be listing this in my Etsy shop, with pattern credit link back to you
You are sweet, Lynn! Happy making!
Hi. I have a question. .. in row 2 is the ch 5 also considered a double crochet? I am only getting 7 dc
Yes, it does. The starting chain/turning chain counts as a stitch. Hope this helps!
how do i download the pattern to make this beautiful shawl?
Hi, Clara ~
Thanks for asking. I will have the pdf loaded into Ravelry soon or you could follow these great instructions HERE from Crochet Street. Here is the actual link should you need to paste it in: http://crochetstreet.com/2014/10/how-to-print-free-patterns-from-a-blog/
I’m new to crocheting and not very good at reading/understanding patterns so I’m confused on row 1if the 6dc go in the loop or where.
Hi, Linda ~ Yes, they do. 🙂
Hello,
Thank you for posting such a lovely free pattern. I am new to crochet and am having a hard time following the instructions in the pattern. I was able to Ch 4, sl st to form a loop, and work Row 1 up until ” – 6dc, 1 ch-3 space” Could you provide a bit more direction. I’m not certain how to “read” the hyphens and continue the pattern.
Thanks in advance for your response.
Hi, Marsha ~ That simply means that once you reach the end of the row, you’ll have 6 double crochets and 1 chain-3 space. Hope this helps!
Good morning! I watched your tutorial for a half double foundation chain, and I get HOW to do it. But my question is HOW or WHY or in WHAT circumstance is it used? Are there patterns that call for it specifically or does it create a foundation chain PLUS the illusion of “Row 1” all in one? Do you always just chain 3 or was that just for illustration — would you normally chain more than that? LOL . . .
CONFUSED!!! Thanks.
Viki
Hello,Viki –
Use it any time you need an “elastic” chain. Every pattern uses stitches differently so you just have to look for the specific instruction for each pattern. 🙂
OK. I understand that but now I lost that link! I can think of several times an “elastic” foundation would come in handy as sometimes it feels tight compared to the rest of the garment. IF you can give me that link again, I surely would appreciate it. Thanks so much.
Yes, exactly. It’s less rigid and extremely versatile. How to Foundation Half Double Crochet Video by Kim Guzman
bless and thank you!!!
Thank you for coming by!
Hello,
I persevered and am able to complete the pattern. Thank you again for posting it.
I’m so glad, Marsha! I’m so sorry I was away.
I did not block it. It settled in as I worked with it. Love this yarn.
I love all of the designs she creates. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the pattern.
You’re welcome.
I love variegated yarns. I REALLY love what you’ve done with them! Please don’t stop using them in your creations!
Fabulous, Becky. Thanks for your comment!
I love this pattern! I have an Etsy shop. Coraline could I use your pattern to make shawls and sell them on my shop?
Thanks
Absolutely! Thank you for asking.
I just love this !!! I have made two so far and want to make lots more 😀
Thank you, Melinda! Exactly how I feel. If you have any pictures you’d like to share with the Simply Collectible Community, we’d love for you to submit them using the Submit tab in the menu.
I love this pattern I want to make it for my mom. She is a larger woman, and I was wondering if I need to make it better and how? I’m fairly new at making large crochet products and was wondering how this shawl seems to be able to use as a “shawl” but also connected in the wrap style? Please help, my dad helped me pick out this pattern and we both know my mom we will love it. She has a breast cancer remission anniversary on Feb 15, and I’m hoping to make this for her.
Hi, Brandie ~ I would probably try continuing with the pattern sequence with one more skein, then try a border of some type to widen it. This pattern is very flexible and I’m sure you can make it work. Feel free to email me your pics and I can help with your progress. 🙂
Hi Celine, I love this pattern. I am making this for my daughter who wants it in a dark gray. I will post a picture when I am done. I previously posted a few questions regarding the placement of certain stitches in the pattern. I have since resolved those issues.
New question: Would the magic circle be appropriate to begin this pattern. I tried it but some how it didn’t look right. I will be making a few more of the items in the Coraline Shawl series
Thank you.
Debbie Chance
Oh, that’s wonderful, Debra! (Sorry I hadn’t gotten back to you. I have so many lovely comments that sometimes it’s hard to get to them every day. 🙂 )
I tried the magic circle, and honestly, it just looked like a knot and kind of rolled in on itself or looked twisted. I love the magic circle, but you may have to put in extra effort on this one.
Thank you, Chelseas Creative Crochet!
