Edgy Messy Bun Hat
So, this is the 3rd out of 6 planned messy bun hat crochet patterns that I’m planning. There may be more because they are just too much fun! This one happens to be adult or child size. If you want this as a Full Beanie, follow the instruction at the end of the pattern. Alright! So, let’s get started! I’ll be sure to add a gallery to each of these or you may go to my free crochet patterns page to see more – http://simplycollectiblecrochet.com/free-crochet-patterns/

Special Stitches – 3rd Loop – a.k.a. Back bump, back hump – In this pattern, it is the loop behind the stitch immediately following the back loop. Here’s a video showing where it is.
Worked from the top down in a spiral. Chains do not count as stitches. Do not join at the end of the row and do not turn. Instead, slip stitch in the back bump of the second chain. (Image included.) Use your stitch marker at the beginning of each round. Working in the 3rd loop is easiest when you crochet loosely. A video is available for the 3rd loop. You may try to work with your hat right side in to get to the 3rd loop easily and turn it right side out when you get to the band. Scroll UP for the 3rd loop video!
Chain 28 (or Chain 22 for 16″ hat), join with a slip stitch to form a loop, chain 1, do not turn
Round 1: HDC in each chain around, slip stitch in the back bump of the second chain, chain 1, do not turn – total of 28 HDCs
Round 2: Working in the 3rd loop of each stitch, 2 DC in each around, do not join, do not turn, slip stitch in the back bump of the second chain – 56 DC total.
It will definitely be floopy at the top, but it doesn’t fit floopy. It’s just a full size at the top to accommodate for comfort.
Round 3-11: Still working in the 3rd loop, DC in each around – 56 DC
Round 12-14: HDC in the 3rd loop around – 56 HDC
Round 15-16: SC in the 3rd loop around – 56 SC
Finishing: Slip stitch in the next 3rd loop, fasten off, and sew in the ends.
To make a full Beanie: You can HDC2TOG (hdc decrease) around for the next 1 or 2 rows depending on the height you want and weave it together like this!
